Meggings Man Clothing: 1 Year Anniversary

WGN Chicago Interview (centered, Founders Andrew and Adam)

WGN Radio, Chicago Interview (middle, Founders Andrew and Adam)

One year, we’re still here. And that’s all you!

In the midst of the coldest winter Chicago had seen in years, an idea sparked. After many late nights and a little bit of luck, it caught fire. Meggings Man Clothing set out to reintroduce people to the idea of men wearing form fitting pants. And to destroy the concept that masculinity was defined by what a man should or should not wear.

After a two month media blitz kicked off 2014, it became pretty clear the world had been reintroduced to men in tights. And, judging by the success of our first year, the idea of masculinity in clothing has shifted. Believe me though, that didn’t happen overnight.

The first few months of this year, while certainly full of Meggings Man supporters and people with a real interest in what we were up to, had many haters. My partner and I have a Dropbox folder full of hateful comments. We kept nearly all of them. These would act not only as motivation but also something to hopefully look back on and realize how far world has come in regards to men’s fashion and acceptance in general.

As the trolls faded, the real fun began. The Meggings Man community took off and really came alive. We’ve gotten to know a lot of you guys through social media and customer emails. It’s been a legit experience and one that shouldn’t be understated. You, our customer, are the energy that keeps this train moving.

Meggings, or male leggings for some, have been over the last year creeping into mainstream style and last night solidified that they’re here to stay, at least for 2014.

While some find men in leggings confusing and outright strange, it really isn’t a far cry from skin tight skinny jeans that have been on trend for a while now. With solid colors and out of this world prints, like the Jeremy Scott ‘Internet’ leggings Kiedis wore, there will definitely be a meggings style to fit any mood.

We all know fashion looks to history for inspiration and I look forward to the day everyday men’s fashion embodies concepts of dress from the Middle Ages and the Baroque period to name a few of my favorite eras. However let’s not bring back the corsets for women but let’s bring back the hose (tights) for men. Although today every girl has at least two pairs of leggings in her closet because they are “so comfortable,” and even though they don’t wear them as intended –to be layered not use them as pants- this garment is a great piece to have in your closet fellas.

Leggings have been a part of wardrobes roughly since the thirteenth century although there was probably a similar garment earlier on. There have been various forms of the legging and of course it was not always called the legging or megging as they are called for menswear. They have been called hose during the Renaissance, trews in Scotland, panalettes during the Crinoline period, and puttees among other names. This garment was initially worn by both genders usually for warmth, even protection, as one can understand. In fact soldiers in the nineteenth century wore a legging type garment to block dirt from entering their shoes, these garments were called puttees. Basically at first soldiers would wrap a thick cloth around their ankles but later on the canvas leggings were used by soldiers. Cowboys wore them to protect: their legs from chapping (as a result of riding,) snake bites and their pants from tearing. However it was not until the 1970’s that leggings were worn for fashion instead of just functionality mostly by women.

Universe, meet Meggings

The world’s most comfortable pant has arrived — for dudes. Finally. They’ve been dubbed “meggings,” otherwise known as leggings for men. Although the concept of tight-fitting pants is nothing new for men (Lenny Kravitz concurs), the idea of leggings for men is fresh and could very well follow the same path as skinny jeans.

Conan O'Brien Jeggings

Conan O’Brien’s jeggings

According to most fashion blogs, the “meggings” craze took hold in the U.K. and then naturally made its way to the US coasts (NYC, Southern California). And also, apparently, to Conan O’Brien’s studio. The 6’4″ host was seen showing off his lengthy legs on a 2010 episode of his late night show. Now, technically those are jeggings, but you can’t blame the man. Look at those legs.

The appeal of “meggings” is pretty simple. Comfort. In this writeup, (by Business Insider of publications) a “megger” (one who wears meggings) explains his reasons for embracing the trend:

One proud megger is Mark Dorosz, 34, an English internet entrepreneur who lives on the Upper East Side in Manhattan.“Male tights are so much more comfortable than skinny jeans,” he said. “I’ve always had good legs and it’s nice to show them off all year round.”

It’s hard to say if the trend here in the US will continue inland from the coasts, or if it will fall off the radar into obscurity. Either way, we’re willing to bet that your iPhone’s autocorrect will warm up to “meggings” by the end of 2013.

It’s safe to say that we’ll be there every step of the way as the world of leggings for men evolves. And perhaps, one day, we’ll be calling ourselves a Meggings Men.
